We at Cremation Care Centre have seen that clients have questions related to what happens to a person’s social media accounts and email accounts after their passing. Here we look at the processes involved in managing them.

How To Manage A Facebook Account After A Loved One Passes

If someone has passed away, it is Facebook’s policy to memorialize that account. The memorialized accounts are places where family and friends can gather and share their memories after a loved one has passed away. Memorializing the account is also a way to keep it keep as no one can log into it.

You would need to access this information via Facebook’s help center- look for the contact us link on the page and fill in the required details for memorializing the account.  If you prefer not to memorialize it and want to remove the account, you have that option too. As a verified family member, you can request that your loved one’s account be removed from FB.

How To Manage A Gmail Account After A Loved One Passes

If a family member passes away and they used a Gmail account, you’d have to contact Google so they can handle that account. There are various ways to manage the account, such as:

  • Close the account
  • Obtain data from the account
  • Submit a request to receive any amounts that may be on that account

You will need to fill out a specific Google form to inform them about the death of your family member and which option you would like to go ahead with. Once you have submitted the form, provide the person’s death certificate copy as that would be the proof of death. Google will then review your request, contact you to inform you whether they have accepted your request.
